Gay in Switzerland

Since 1st January 2007 Switzerland has a civil union for same sex couples nationwide. This replaces some cantonal local laws, some are still in place because they also apply to straight couples based on the French PACS law.

On 2nd January 2007 the first union was signed in Locarno, in the Southern Switzerland region of Ticino. Today hundreds more have been signed all over, but mainly in largest cities.

In the Middle Ages Switzerland was not an exeption to the rest of Europe, as sodomy was a crime and in 1482 the Knight Von Hohenberg and his lover were put to death with fire for sodomy.

During the Reform period and with Calvin we know a few execution for crimes "against nature" were carried out.

Only after the French revolution and the Napoleonic army was controlling the country did same sex relation started to be depenalised in the west and south of the country. In the German-speaking part it was not yet depenalised and a maximum of 4 years in jail were given for this crime.

Only in 1942 homosexuality was depenalized nationwide. Much earlier than when women were allowed to vote. Women would only gain the right to vote in 1972.

On 23 June 1979 the first gay pride took place in the city of Bern, the capital of the country with around 300 people.

Today a number of organisations and associations offer advice, counselling and associations offer advice, counselling, health services and more.

PinkCross is the Swiss national organization. HAZ in Zurich, Dilogai in Geneva and Collegati in Ticino are a just to name a few.

Please find all details about associations, organisations and groups in our directory section.

In 1992 by popolar vote the article in the penal code that says same sex is forbidden under 18 was cancelled and put in line with the heterosexual people age of consentment at 16 years old.

Today Zurich has the largest gay pride in the country with 10,000 people and more attending the event, every June.

In May there is a LGBTIQ film festival in Zurich, in November in Bern and many more events to discover in our calendar section, uopdated and with direct links.

Part of this text was written with help of www.lambda-education.ch and www.schwulenarchiv.ch. These sites are only in French and German. Both offer a complete information on Swiss gay history.
